BARREL TABLE
The Barrel Table uses tight-fitting box joints and metal bands to give it a rustic, vintage flair. The screws are left exposed, celebrating them. I built a custom jig to repetitively cut the channels for the joints and angles of the vertical planks. I also taught myself how to use a press brake to get the right curve on the metal.
This was the first furniture piece I ever built. I needed a side table for my bedroom, but more than that, I wanted to challenge myself to learn tight-fitting joinery and explore what happens when two materials share equal billing in a single object.
The aesthetic I was after was rustic and vintage, but with a contemporary edge. In search of inspiration, I turned to ships, vessels that have long paired wood and metal with both function and beauty. What if my table was a barrel? One with an open face, inviting you to store and display personal objects, while the construction itself, the joints, the hardware, the materials, became as much a part of the design as the form.
